The European Media Initiative believes media freedom and media pluralism lie at the heart of the EU commitment for democracy and fundamental rights.

Successfully submitting a European Citizens’ Initiative in 2013 calling for the partial harmonisation of media policy in Europe, we have led the EU to accept that it does have competences to legislate in this matter.

We have pushed for the completion of the Commission’s three-steps approach, fiercely advocating for the establishment of a regular EU monitoring of the state of Europe’s media.

Our work now continues to ensure European institutions live up to their commitments, beginning from a review of the now out-dated Audiovisual Media Services directive.
